The Norway Arts Festival


NORWAY – Organizers promise the 2008 Norway Arts Festival will be biggest and most action packed yet with over 100 artists and a variety of new performances! Festivities begin on July 10 and culminate with the 41st Annual Norway Sidewalk Art Show, a full-day of performances and the Mystic Vibes Reggae Street Dance on July 12.

The Norway Arts Festival Line up:
Thursday, July 10: Christopher Glass, President of Maine Preservation, will present a lecture on “Art and Quality of Place” at 7 p.m., at the Norway Memorial Library.

Friday, July 11: The Humble Farmer, Robert Skoglund, will perform for an NPC-TV fundraiser at 7:30 p.m., at the Norway Grange on Whitman Street. Art Moves Dance will perform at 6 p.m., at the Art Moves Dance Studio on Cottage Street. The Norway Memorial Library Annual Book Sale will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., at the Norway Grange on Whitman Street and the American Legion Post #82 will serve a Ham & Bean Supper from 5 to 7 p.m., at the American Legion on Main Street. The Rotary-Kiwanis Annual Auction will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. under the big tent at the Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School.

Saturday, July 12:
Artists: Over 100 artists from all over New England will converge along the sidewalks of Historic Norway Village for the 41st Annual Norway Sidewalk Art Show. The art exhibited will represent a full spectrum from realist paintings, abstract multi-media, photography, fiber art, jewelry, metal and wood sculpture, glass art and much more.

Music: Street musicians will perform at Creative Media from 10 - 4 p.m.; Act V will perform music of the 1950s and 1960 from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. in the new Norway Park on the corner of Deering and Main Streets, followed by Katey Branch and Geoff Warner of Heartstones Music at 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Later a Gambia Storyteller will perform from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the new Norway Park. The Richard Felt Orchestra will perform from 1 to 3 p.m. on the porch of the Weary Club. The Tantalus Field will play from 3:30 to 4:15 p.m. in Witherill Park. Classical Pianist Elan Sicroff will perform Sacred Hymns & Rhythms of the East at 4 p.m. at the Universalist Unitarian Church. Capping off the day’s festivities will be the Mystic Vibes Reggae Street Dance from 7 to 10 p.m. in the Municipal Parking Lot behind Fare Share Market.

Dance: Performances will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on the Library Green, including: Naveah: Modern and Hip Hop; Erica Carlson: Modern and Expressive; Laurie Babin: Belly Dance and Rockycoast Bellydance of Portland.

Performance Art: Toni Seger: Visual Poetry will be held at Café Nomad from 10 a.m. to noon. Poets on the Porch will read from 1 to 3 p.m. on the Library Green and Trash Into Art will hold a Giant Theatrical Puppet Show at 3 p.m. in Witherill Park. The Fuda Drum Group will play from 1 to 3 p.m. in Butters Park.

Children’s Activities: Naveah will have Dance Games from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Library Green; the Boxberry School will have arts activities from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Witherill Park; Toby Crosby will hold a puppet workshop for children from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Witherill Park. And all day along there will be face painting and sidewalk chalk art in front of Witherill Park. In addition, local skaters and BMXers will show their stuff in a skate park set up in the parking lot next to Grassroots Graphics.

Other activities: Rhinoz Liningz will hold an exhibit entitled: “The Body of Art” from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Cottage Street Studio; The Finish American Heritage Society Annual Yard Sale will be held all day in the Dow’s Law Office parking lot; The Second Congregational Church will hold a Lobster Luncheon at noon and Annual Quilt Sale from 10 to 4 p.m.; The Universalist Unitarian Church will hold a Chicken Pie Luncheon at noon; The Norway Memorial Library Annual Book Sale will on-going at the Norway Grange on Whitman Street.; The Otisfield Free Baptist Church will hold a Craft Sale at the Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School; Golden Rule Project will have a program entitled “Art unites members of Global Community” from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the grass next to the right of the Norway Gift Shop; The Norway Historical Society will have programs on the Marigold Tea Room, Norway Village and Steamboats at the Historical Society on Main Street; The Order of the Eastern Star & Masonic Bodies will hold a Public Supper from 4 to 6 p.m. at the lodge on Temple St.; Rotary-Kiwanis Annual Auction will be held at the Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School from 5 to 9 p.m. under the big tent at the Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School; The Art Signs of Delsey Andrews: “Thoughtful projections and Art Quotes” will be exhibiting along the Festival route, and Norway Arts Festival T-Shirt Sales will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Food Court next to L.F. Pike and Son; p.m.

Non-Profits: Norway Downtown will be selling the 2009 Calendar: “A Year in A Small Town: The Art of Duncan Slade.” The Western Maine Art Group will hold a Membership Drive at the Matolcsy Arts Center from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; The Veteran’s Home will sell raffle tickets in the Food Court next to L.F. Pike and Son and Responsible Pet Care will hold a fund-raising activity in the same location.

Food Vendors include: Fare Share Coop, Caribbean Cuisine, Order of the Eastern Star & Masonic Bodies, Hot Dogs and a Second Congo Church Lemonade Stand on the Library Green Corner, in addition to numerous Main Street restaurants.
